Overview

The Future AI Infrastructure team at Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK) is exploring scalable, energy-efficient, and sustainable optical technologies that will shape the future of data center infrastructure. We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic PhD student to join us in spring/summer 2025 to contribute to topics related to integrated photonics design and modelling of active and passive components. You will be joining a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative team to work on creative and challenging problems aiming to push the technology boundaries and deliver transformative solutions.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

 

· Be enrolled in a PhD program in Photonics, Physics, Electronic Engineering, or related discipline.

· Knowledge of the physics of semiconductor photonics devices.

· Experience with integrated photonics design and simulation.

· Experience with characterization of photonics devices in an optical lab.

 

Other Requirements:

 

· Interns are expected to be physically located in Cambridge, UK.

 

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

 

· Experience with optical simulation tools (e.g. Lumerical, RSoft, MEEP, Tidy3D, Zemax).

· Familiarity with free-space optics.

· Ability to code in Python and familiarity with git.

· Strong technical and scientific communication skills.

 

 

Responsibilities

· Design and simulation of semiconductor active and/or passive devices.

· Documenting and presenting your findings in technical documents and presentations.
